Here is an article I saved from the ABC show The Revolution that was on this past summer.
Who doesn’t love cereal? Odds are, it’s been something we’ve been eating and enjoying since childhood. Did you know Americans eat 10 pounds — or 160 bowls — of cereal per person per year? But most popular cereals are super sugary!
Fortunately, Harley Pasternak has some options for healthier cereal that will help make breakfast much better for you:
#1: Simple High-Fiber Cereal
Ingredients:
1 cup high-fiber cereal
1/2 cup blueberries
dash of cinnamon
1/2 cup of 1% or skim milk
Combine cereal, blueberries, and cinnamon.
Pour milk over cereal.
Prep time: 2 minutes
Approx. 220 calories with 1/2 cup skim milk
#2: Morning Muesli
Ingredients:
1/2 cup old-fashioned or quick cooking oats
1/2 cup nonfat plain yogurt
1 tablespoon agave nectar
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup fresh blueberries or other berries
3 tablespoons chopped hazelnuts
1 cup of 1% or skim milk
In small bowl, stir the oats, yogurt, 1/2 cup of the milk, the agave nectar, lemon juice and vanilla until blended.
Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour or overnight.
Stir in remaining 1/2 cup of milk. Top with berries and nuts and serve.
Prep time: approx. 3 min (after marinating)
approx. 300 calories w/skim milk
#3: Half and Half Cereal
Ingredients:
1/2 cup of your kids’ favorite cereal
1/2 cup of whole grain cereal
1/2 sliced banana or 1/2 cup strawberries
1/2 cup 1% or skim milk
Combine first three ingredients, then pour milk.
Prep time: 2 minutes
Approx. 300 calories with 1% milk
